Matthew was one of Jesus' 12 Disciples. In a prior life, he was a despised tax collector, but his life was forever changed by the man from Galilee they called Jesus. Matthew is the first book of the New Testament. The Gospel of Matthew was written to his Jewish brethren to prove Jesus is the Messiah and to explain God's Kingdom.
